The Relation between Metabolic Acid and the Virulence of Porphyromonas gingivalis Serotype b

Abstract
Porhyromonas gingivalis has been implicated as a strong pathogen in periodontal disease and ahs been known to have three serotypes of Porphyromonas gingivalis. The purpose of this study is to investigate on the relation of metabolic acids and the
virulence of Porphyrommonas gingivalis serotype b.
Five strains of Korean isolates Porphyromonas gingivalis were identified as serotype b by indirect immunofluorescence assay.
In the study of DNA synthesis of cultured cells derived from periodontal ligament, the inhibition of DNA synthesis by sonic extracts of Porphyromonas gingivalis W50 was more than that of Porphyromonas gingivalis 381, less than that of
Porphyromonas
gingivalis A7A1-28, and more than that of Korean isolates.
In volatile and non-volatile metabolic acids, all of the Porphyromonas gingivalis serotype b produced butyric acid. However, the increased proportion of butyric acid and the presence of lactic acid produced by the Porphyromonas gingivalis
serotype
b had
a positive correlation with the degree of inhibition of cultured cells derived from periodontal ligament. These results suggested that metabolic acid might be related to the virulence of Porphyromonas gingivalis serotype b.
